The Viral Snack Of The Summer

Cheesy Puff Pastry Hot Dog Boats

Cheesy Puff Pastry Hot Dog Boats is a recipe made with cheese stuffed hot dogs, Muenster cheese, and puff pastry that is going viral on all the social media platforms. It’s a great addition to any hot dog buffet that can be topped any way you like, though I use chili, onions, and mustard.

I have been seeing these baked hot dogs all over the internet and I had to give them a try. Trust me when I tell you they did not disappoint as they baked up cheesy and delicious.

I had just made my chili recipe, so I used it to top my hot dogs along with finely diced white onion and yellow mustard. I love a good Coney dog and this was a great version of them.

Puff pastry sheet

Puff Pastry

There is not much to this recipe, just a few simple ingredients including puff pastry. My store sells these puff pastry sheets that are already cut into rectangles, making them the perfect size for these hot dog pastries.

You can also just buy sheets of puff pastry and cut your own rectangles. If you have never purchased puff pastry before it is always in the frozen food section.

Slices of cheese on a baking sheet

Cheese Please

Not much to say about the cheese. I used Muenster so that it was slightly “oily” enough not to stick to the pan.

This will bake up onto your puff pastry so that it is crispy and brown when you flip these over after baking. Pictured above is how I lay the cheese out.

Top However You Please

There can be endless ideas to top these dogs. You can make these Chicago Style. I did the chili, onions and yellow mustard.

You can make these and have a whole buffet of toppings! Get creative and have fun!

Cheesy Puff Pastry Hot Dog Boats Recipe

Cheesy Puff Pastry Hot Dog Boats

Cheesy Puff Pastry Hot Dog Boats are the trending snack of the summer. These hot dogs can be topped anyway you prefer. Baked up with Muenster cheese and flaky puffy pastry, this takes hot dogs to the next level.

Ingredients

  • 4 Cheese Stuffed Hot Dogs, Unstuffed Hot Dogs are fine too
  • 8 slices of Muenster Cheese
  • 4 rectangle sheets of Puff Pastry Dough, the rectangles should be about 2 inches longer than the hot dogs (I buy the rectangles already cut but you can cut your own from a sheet of the dough)
  • 1 Egg
  • Any Toppings of your choice, I used chili, onions and yellow mustard to make mine Coney Island style
  • Some type of Non Stick Cooking Spray

Instructions

  1. Cover a baking pan in foil or parchment paper and spray with a non stick cooking spray.
  2. Place two pieces of cheese together end to end in four spots on the pan *pictured in the post before the recipe card
  3. Cut the hot dogs in half lengthwise and lay them cut side down on top of the cheese rectangles. *pictured in the post before the recipe card
  4. Lay the rectangle of puff pastry over the hot dogs and cheese. The puff pastry should be larger and longer than the hot dogs and cheese.
  5. Lightly press the dough around the hot dogs as if you are snuggling up the hot dogs in a pastry dough blanket.
  6. Use the tines of a fork to press the dough all around the edges *pictured in the post before the recipe card.
  7. Whisk the egg well with a couple of teaspoons of water and brush the pastry dough generously with the egg.
  8. Bake at 350° for approximately 25 minutes, but all ovens are different, so the first time you make it check periodically until it's golden brown. Once it's done, remove from the oven, let rest for five minutes, then flip over and add the toppings of your choice.
